The T3 Financial Crime Unit, the joint initiative launched by Tether, TRON, and TRM Labs in September 2024, said Thursday it has now frozen more than $450 million in illicit assets globally. The unit said its 2025 illicit-proceeds interceptions ran 43.9% ahead of the prior year, with law enforcement agencies in the United States, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, and Bulgaria leading by blacklisted volume.

T3 FCU was built as a rapid communication and blocklisting system for illicit use of USDT on the TRON blockchain. The unit said it has identified suspicious transactions and frozen assets within 24 hours during multiple account takeover incidents and violent crime emergencies. Its 2025 caseload spanned investigations into banned or controlled substances, exchange hacks and exploits, DPRK-linked activity, terrorist financing, violent crime, and so-called wrench attacks involving home invasions, kidnappings, and extortion.

The headline action of the past year was Operation Lusocoin, a Brazilian Federal Police investigation that froze more than R$3 billion in cryptocurrency assets, including 4.3 million USDT linked to the criminal network. The unit said it now operates in coordination with regulatory agencies and government partners in 23 jurisdictions across five continents, including the U.S., Spain, Germany, Brazil, and the United Kingdom.

The Financial Action Task Force cited T3 FCU earlier this year as an “invaluable resource for law enforcement agencies worldwide,” highlighting it alongside TRM’s Beacon Network in public reporting on public-private partnership models for combating illicit activity in digital assets.

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino framed the milestone as a starting point: “This $450 million milestone is just the beginning of what T3 is capable of.” TRM’s Head of Global Investigations Chris Janczewski, a former IRS Criminal Investigation Special Agent, said success now depends on pairing real-time intelligence with coordinated public-private action to disrupt illicit activity as it happens.
