Our History

Unguka Bank was incorporated in the republic of Rwanda on 30th-Janaury 2005 as a Microfinance institution. The Bank was a society limited by shares that resulted from a handshake of 214 shareholders who started with a capital of 321 100 000 Rfws represented by 3 211 shares of 100 000 Rwf each one.
Starting with only two branches (Remera and Nyabugogo) and the head office at Nyabugogo which shifted to Remera a year later in 2006 then later moved to the city center in August 2011.
On 6th April, 2011, the Board of Directors of the National Bank of Rwanda issued the Bank with a license of Microfinance Bank. From then the transformation from IMF-UNGUKA S.A in Unguka Bank and hence started operations as a Microfinance Bank.
In April 2012; UNGUKA BANK received a strategic investor who is RURAL IMPULSE FUND II from LUXEMBOURG managed by INCOFIN a Belgian company with 1 billion as share capital and 0.5 billion as share premium. With the incorporation of the retained earnings the share capital was raised up to 2.8 Rwandan billion.
In order to receive the strategic investor, the former shareholders of UNGUKA Bank decided to organize themselves under one umbrella body “UNGUKA INVESTMENT GROUP LTD” in order to put together their efforts and have one voice that would be a holding company investing in other areas.
In 2015, a new investor in the names of PPROGRESSION EASTERN AFRICA MICROFINANCE EQUITY FUND (PEAMEF) was also registered, bringing the total Share capital to Frw 5,179,165,400. The shareholding is detailed as follows: (i) UNGUKA INVESTIMENT GROUP with Frw 2,642,236,100 (51.02%), (ii) RIF II with Frw 1,467,909,000 (28.34%) and (iii) PEAMEF with Frw 1,069,020,300 (20.64%).
In September-2018, UNGUKA BANK changed from a Private company limited by shares to become a Public Limited Company moving from being called UNGUKA BANK Ltd to UNGUKA BANK PLC.
