Elon Musk’s latest AI prediction compares the technology’s rise to a supersonic tsunami. He posted the claim to X on Monday, alongside a chart showing growth breaking out since spring 2026.

The chart plots monthly progress from July 2023 through July 2026. It labels November 2024 “it’s so over,” then shows the curve snapping upward once 2026 begins.

That month marked a trough in AI hype. Media outlets reported that OpenAI’s next model, code-named Orion, showed only modest gains over GPT-4, reviving fears that AI scaling had hit a wall. OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman pushed back, posting that there was no wall.

AI Growth Breaks Out After a Flat Start

The chart’s shape lines up with recent benchmark results. Grok 4.5, the model built by Musk’s xAI, recently topped an independent agent benchmark from Artificial Analysis. It beat rival systems on both cost and speed.

Musk has also said SpaceX engineering data will feed Grok’s next training run. The data excludes material restricted under U.S. arms-export rules. The move is meant to sharpen Grok’s reasoning on real-world physical problems, an area where text-only data tends to fall short.

Meanwhile, xAI’s pace has pushed Musk to revisit his own rankings. He recently reversed his public stance on Anthropic, calling the rival “the current industry leader” after months of public criticism. That reversal suggests lab competition, not just chart lines, is driving the tsunami framing.

Musk’s AI Prediction Fits a Familiar Pattern

The supersonic tsunami post echoes remarks Musk made at Davos in January. He said artificial general intelligence (AGI) could surpass one person’s intelligence before 2026 ends. AGI is the point where a system matches human reasoning across most tasks.

He has separately projected that AI will exceed all of humanity’s combined intelligence within five years. Musk frames that outcome as both a historic economic opportunity and an existential risk. He has warned AI could slip beyond human control, even as it promises what he calls an age of extreme material abundance.

Not every expert shares that timeline. Geoffrey Hinton, the computer scientist often called the Godfather of AI, disagrees. He has said broad AGI could still be up to two decades away, far later than Musk’s forecast.

That split has reached crypto circles too. Coverage of crypto’s AI pivot describes rising infrastructure demand even as autonomy timelines stay contested. Ben Goertzel, chief executive of the Artificial Superintelligence Alliance, has separately warned that advanced systems already rival state-level capabilities. That claim lends some support to Musk’s accelerated timeline.

Whether the chart’s trajectory holds through the rest of 2026 remains unverified. Musk’s post, however, makes clear he expects the wave to keep building rather than recede. That expectation holds whether or not the rest of the world agrees.
